Common Types of Glass Damage: Causes and Solutions

cracked glass

What are the most common kinds of glass damage?

Glass is weird in that it’s durable but also quite fragile. Glass damage can occur for a number of reasons, from accidents to natural wear and tear. Below are some common kinds of glass damage, as well as their causes and potential solutions.

Scratches happen because of abrasive contact with objects or cleaning materials, including metal tools, abrasive cleaners, or hard debris. Minor scratches can be buffed out using specialized glass polishing compounds or kits. For deeper scratches, replacement of the glass may be necessary.

Chips and cracks can be caused by stones or debris impacting the glass. Small chips and cracks can be fixed by using resin-based windshield repair kits. Larger, more severe damage may require professional repair or replacement.

Fogging and condensation are other common problems and typically indicate a broken seal, which allows moisture to penetrate. Sometimes, fogged or condensated glass units can be repaired by replacing the seal or inserting drying agents. However, if the damage is extensive, replacement of the glass unit may be necessary.

Etching or hazing on glass surfaces can come about from exposure to harsh chemicals, mineral deposits, or environmental pollutants. Minor etching can be solved by using specialized glass cleaners or mild abrasive compounds. Severe etching may require professional restoration or replacement of the glass.

Can I Hang a Heavy Mirror on Drywall?

A heavy mirror on a wall in an apartment.

Hang Your Mirror With the Experts

“Mirror, mirror on the wall … “, is a few words to a classic childhood fairy tale, and for the homeowner in the Fort Worth, Texas area, a question asked when considering the best way for a mirror installation. The heavier and larger the mirror, the more reason to consider having it professionally done.

How much does it cost to install a mirror?

As you may think, it will depend on the size, weight, and type of the mirror and the cost can vary between companies. On average, the cost for a professional mirror installation is typically by the square foot, with the total starting around $150 and going up to $500 or more. Another factor that can have an impact on the cost is if the mirror is framed or frameless.

How is a frameless mirror installation done?

In bathrooms, hallways, or formal living rooms, a frameless mirror can be the finishing touch to a home’s décor. But the frameless mirror installation can be challenging! For the DIY homeowner, we offer some tips for this challenge:

Step One: The Placement

Before you get all the tools out for your frameless mirror installation, determine where you want the mirror placed. If possible, have another person help and with a level, make sure it is level, marking the position with a pencil.

Step Two: The Method

Depending on the size of the mirror, installation can be done in a number of ways.  Using an adhesive for a lightweight, small frameless mirror and a larger mirror installation should be done with clips or hardware.

  • Mirror Adhesive Method

Even with a lightweight small mirror, use a strong construction adhesive. Choose an adhesive that is meant for heavy objects and apply with a caulk gun half-inch thick daubs over the backside of the mirror. Now position the mirror in the predetermined spot, and press carefully but firmly, holding for ten minutes, allowing the adhesive to cure.

  • Mirror Clip Method

Choose one of the two types of mirror installation hardware for a large frameless mirror:

  • Mirror Clips: These are installed immediately above and below the frameless mirror to hold it in place.
  • Z-Clips: These are two-part interlocking clips that secure the mirror to the wall by sliding together and locking them in place.

Step Three: The Hardware

For these two types of hardware, find the wall studs in the placement area you’ve predetermined. Next, drill anchor holes in the wall where the hardware you choose will be installed. If you’re using the mirror clips, install them precisely above and below where the mirror installation is planned. Now, use a screwdriver to drill the anchor holes and install the anchors. Next, screw the mirror clips securely and tightly into the wall anchors and then slide the mirror in between the mirror clips or onto the a-clips.

How are most bathroom mirrors mounted?

A mirror installation can give your bathroom a fashionable style and make it functional too. Here are some things you need to know about this essential mirror installation:

1. Hanging a heavy mirror requires special care, like hanging large pieces of art, and using brackets or wires for support.

2. Know the wall type where the mirror installation is taking place first. Drywall, masonry, or plaster each require a different method for a secure installation.

3. Knowing the weight of the mirror is important so that you can choose the right method for the mirror installation.

Now, on to the tips for a framed mirror installation with hooks:

  1. Hold the mirror in the position you want your mirror installed and mark the area with either painter’s tape or a pencil.
  2. Check the back of the framed mirror to see if it has rings or a wire.
  3. Measure the positioning of the mirror on a level with tape where the hooks will be placed for the rings or wire.
  4. Using the measurements, mark the wall under the previous mark from the mirror’s top center.
  5. If your mirror installation will be with hooks or rings, confirm the marks are level.
  6. If there is a stud, secure the mounting hardware there. If the mirror installation is going elsewhere, install wall anchors.
  7. Now it’s time for the mirror installation!

Do you need an electrician to install a lighted bathroom mirror?

How do you keep water in a frameless shower?

How do you keep water in a frameless shower?

The real estate market is hot in the Fort Worth, Texas area right now and homeowners are looking for ways to update their homes to get the most out of selling. The kitchen and bathroom are the two areas that any realtor will advise to make updates to, and for many owners of older homes, the bathroom needs the most update. They often start with a frameless shower glass door installation.

What is a frameless shower glass installation?

A frameless shower glass installation is when the doors and enclosures are frameless. Instead of frames, the glass panels are held with clips and hinges, and the joints are caulked. The glass thickness is either 3/8” or 1/2” thick to give a stable and rigid structure.

Frameless shower glass door installation can be done in either of the following two categories: Swinging doors or Sliding doors. The shape and size of the shower enclosure will be determined by the homeowner’s preferences. Each glass door panel is attached to a wall using metal hinges, and vinyl seals are included to contain the water.

What are other options for shower installations?

There are two other options that a homeowner can choose if desired. They are:

  • Semi-frameless glass shower door:  This installation will include both framed and frameless edges, meaning they will have less metal than the traditional framed shower door, but thinner glass can be used, typically either 3/16” or 1/4” thick. This type of semi-frameless shower glass door installation is less expensive than the frameless type.
  • Framed glass shower door: These are built with glass panels of 5/32” or 3/16” thick glass and have an aluminum framing. This is the more budget-friendly type of shower door.

What type of glass is used for frameless shower doors?

The most common type of glass used with frameless glass shower doors is tempered glass. Tempered glass goes through a heating process followed by a rapid cooling that makes it a durable glass. Tempered glass frameless shower doors are available in a variety of styles including:

  • Clear
  • Ultra-clear
  • Acid-etched
  • Patterned
  • Tinted
  • Cast

Modern frameless glass shower doors can also use laminated glass or laminated tempered glass. Both are formed by adhering two sheets of glass to a central transparent vinyl sheet to keep the glass intact even when broken.

Are frameless shower doors worth it?

When you consider that you spend a good amount of time in your bathroom, updating with a frameless glass shower door is beneficial to you personally as well as for the real estate market. With the variety of designs that are available today, including the tile shapes and sizes, and the different styles in fixtures,  other benefits that make this investment worthwhile include:

  1. Endless Design Possibilities: The size and style of frameless glass shower doors are almost endless. The constraints of the old-school framed glass doors are gone, making the bathroom more open and airy When coupled with the variety of fixtures, it gives a bathroom an elegant appearance.
  2. More Functional: Frameless glass shower doors open in or open outward, making the bathroom more functional.
  3. Easy Cleaning: With frameless glass shower doors, hard minerals and soap scum are gone along with the bacteria and mold that form in the hard-to-clean-and-reach areas. Frameless glass shower doors come with an optically clear material that is weather-resistant with a special oil repellant.
  4. Brighter, Lighter, Spacious: Frameless glass shower doors reflect natural light and illuminate the bathroom, making it look larger. When paired with marble tile, a bathroom looks cleaner, spacious, and updated.

What are the disadvantages of frameless doors?

While a bathroom renovation can be upgraded with a frameless glass shower door installation, and the benefits are many and valuable, there are disadvantages to be considered as well:

  • Cost: The cost of a frameless glass shower door has more glass and professional installation is recommended, making the total cost higher than the traditional framed glass shower door.
  • Instability:  The glass of a frameless glass shower door is going to be heavier, which can cause it to sag over time. When exposed to excessive heat or pressure, there is a slight risk of shattering.
  • Installation: As we stated above, professional installation is recommended by experienced contractors who have worked with them in the past.

Can You See Clearly Now?

Yes, a frameless glass shower door will be more elegant, and easier to clean and maintain, while adding style to your bathroom. Even with all of the benefits, it is worthwhile to weigh against the cons too making sure it is right for your household if you’re remaining in your home. Before you make the investment and you’re planning to sell your home, check with your realtor on comparable properties to see if this is the right decision.

Common Types of Glass Damage: Causes and Solutions

Want Perfect Glass?

Glass is a versatile and widely used material in various aspects of our lives, from residential and commercial buildings to automobiles and electronic devices. Its transparency and durability make it an essential component of modern construction and design. However, like any other material, glass is susceptible to damage over time due to various factors. Understanding the common types of glass damage, their causes, and potential solutions is crucial for maintaining the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of glass structures.

Types of Glass Damage:

  1. Scratches: Surface scratches are a common form of glass damage that can occur due to contact with abrasive materials or improper cleaning techniques. While minor scratches may not affect the structural integrity of the glass, they can compromise its visual clarity and appearance.
  2. Cracks: Cracks in glass can result from impact, stress, or temperature fluctuations. They may start as small hairline cracks and gradually spread, compromising the strength and safety of the glass. Cracked glass poses a significant safety risk, especially in windows, doors, and automotive windshields.
  3. Chips: Chips are small, localized areas of glass damage that can occur due to impact or contact with hard objects. While they may seem minor, chips can weaken the glass and create stress points that may lead to further damage over time.
  4. Haze or Fog: Haze or foggy appearance on glass surfaces is often caused by the accumulation of dirt, dust, or moisture both inside and outside the glass. This can affect visibility and diminish the aesthetic appeal of glass windows, doors, and mirrors.

Causes of Glass Damage:

  1. Impact: Accidental impacts from objects or debris can cause scratches, cracks, and chips in glass surfaces. Common sources of impact include flying debris during construction, hailstorms, and contact with hard objects in residential or commercial settings.
  2. Temperature Fluctuations: Glass expands and contracts in response to temperature changes. Rapid or extreme temperature fluctuations, such as those experienced during seasonal changes or direct exposure to sunlight, can create stress on the glass, leading to cracks or fractures.
  3. Poor Installation: Improper installation techniques or using low-quality materials can compromise the structural integrity of glass components, making them more susceptible to damage over time. This includes inadequate sealing, improper alignment, and using incorrect glass thickness for specific applications.
  4. Abrasive Cleaning Methods: Harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or rough cleaning tools can scratch or damage glass surfaces, especially those with delicate coatings or finishes. Improper cleaning techniques can also leave behind streaks, haze, or residue that affect visibility and appearance.
  5. Natural Wear and Tear: Over time, exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight, moisture, and pollutants can cause gradual deterioration of glass surfaces. This includes issues such as glass corrosion, discoloration, and surface pitting, particularly in outdoor or high-traffic areas.

Solutions for Glass Damage:

  1. Repair vs. Replacement: The appropriate solution for glass damage depends on the severity and extent of the damage. Minor scratches, chips, and haze can often be repaired using specialized glass polishing techniques or surface treatments. However, extensive cracks or structural damage may require complete glass replacement to ensure safety and stability.
  2. Professional Inspection: In cases of significant damage or uncertainty about the extent of the issue, it’s essential to seek the expertise of a professional glass repair company. Experienced technicians can assess the damage, recommend appropriate solutions, and perform repairs or replacements with precision and efficiency.
  3. Preventative Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of glass surfaces can help prevent minor damage and prolong their lifespan. Using gentle cleaning solutions, soft cloths, and non-abrasive tools can minimize the risk of scratches and surface damage. Additionally, applying protective coatings or films to glass surfaces can enhance durability and resistance to environmental factors.
  4. Quality Materials and Installation: Choosing high-quality glass materials and working with reputable glass installation professionals are crucial for ensuring the longevity and performance of glass structures. Proper installation techniques, adequate sealing, and adherence to industry standards can minimize the risk of damage and ensure optimal functionality.

In conclusion, understanding the common types of glass damage, their causes, and potential solutions is essential for maintaining the safety, functionality, and appearance of glass structures in residential, commercial, and automotive settings. By addressing glass damage promptly and employing preventative maintenance measures, property owners can prolong the lifespan of their glass components and ensure long-term durability and performance.

What Kind of Damage Requires Window Repair?

worker providing window repair

What should you do when you need window repair?

Here in Texas, a lot of homeowners like to open up the windows when the weather is nice. Our weather is so unpredictable, you could have that nice day in the middle of winter or the hottest part of the summer. But enjoying that weather through a broken or cracked window isn’t the same thing,  and that makes window repair a necessity. If you’ve found yourself looking for window repair in Fort Worth, TX or any nearby cities, the team at Armstrong's Glass & Mirror is always available to answer any questions you might have. We’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions homeowners have when they’re dealing with the need for window repair services.

How much will it cost to repair my windows?

Like other home repairs, there isn’t any way to “average the cost” of window repairs. The shape, size, and type of window will be key factors in the pricing. Whether the damage is just the glass portion or if the window frame is broken too will affect the cost as well.

Every contractor that provides window repair service is going to have its own rate schedules too. It is wise to call several and get quotes before choosing one for the job. It may be a flat fee once they know the details about the broken window, or it could be an hourly job plus materials.

Can I fix a window myself?

In most cases, a handy DIY homeowner with the proper tools and supplies can do their own window repairs. The most common recommendation though is to hire the window repair job out to an experienced contractor, but not everyone has an unlimited bank account. The following are some window repairs that a DIY homeowner can do without a lot of trouble:

  • Stuck windows: This window repair can be done by rubbing the edges of the window with candle wax or plane the opening edge of the window casement. This is done by unscrewing the casement from the hinges and then using a screwdriver and hammer, tap the window free.
  • Loose, rattling windows: –This window repair is nothing more than adjusting the positions, something akin to installing a new window.
  • Windowsill rot: If only a part of the windowsill is rotten, window repair is still possible. Simply cut back the rotted part and cut another piece of new wood using the piece you just cut off as a template, but a little bit larger. Using a router,  cut the drip groove and then screw the patch into place and sand it so that it’s smooth.
  • Misfit: – If the mortise plate is a misfit from the window frame, use a screwdriver to reposition the plate into its new fitting. Then, trace the outside of the plate so that you have the placement identified and set the plate aside. Now chisel the mortise to change the size if necessary and then reattach.
  • Stiff hinges:  This is one of the easiest window repairs!  Spray WD-40 or some other type of low-viscosity oil on the hinges and then move the back and forth to work the oil into the hinge.
  • Broken catch: A broken window catch can be repaired by using a screwdriver to pry the cover off, then remove the catch and replace it with a new one.
  • Torn window screens:  This can be a downside to having the windows open, but oh so worth it on those beautiful cool nights! You can buy replacement screens or screen patching kits. Just follow the directions on the package.

Can I replace just the glass broken on a window?

Yes, in most cases you can replace the glass instead of attempting window repairs.  This is a popular option for homes where the budget may be too tight to call a professional and will end with the same results. However, if the sash is damaged, glass-only window repair is not possible.

Is it worth it to repair windows?

If the window frames are broken, then no, window repair is not an economical choice. Replacing the entire window will give you a higher ROI, whether you have it done or do it yourself.

How do you fix foggy windows or can you fix foggy windows yourself?

There are several things you can do to prevent windows in your home from fogging up, and they all have to do with ventilation.  Make sure your home has good air circulation and keep the ceiling fans running in every room, including during the winter months. This will keep the warm air from the heated air from sticking to the windows and causing them to fog up.

Purchase a dehumidifier for every room that has foggy windows or invest in a whole-house dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will remove moisture from the air that gets inside double windowpanes.
